Perth is Western Australia’s capital city and the major gateway into the state. Fronting the widest stretch of the meandering Swan River, city and river make a stunning contrast, especially when the skies and river are a perfect Perth blue.
The Swan hosts a range of water sports, including sailing, water skiing, sailboarding, jet boating, fishing, parasailing, cruising. And there are more than fifty kilometres of riverside pathways for walking and cycling.
Perth’s lifestyle is easygoing with a number of inner city parks adding to the relaxed, nature-based feel. And getting around is simple – there’s a free public transport service within the city centre.
Kings Park and endless beaches
For a bird’s eye view, take a helicopter flight, or head to Kings Park for a spectacular view across Perth’s cityscape and river.

The historic suburb of Guildford, about 20km east of Perth’s CBD
The historic suburb of Guildford, about 20km east of Perth’s CBD, has some beautiful and historically-important old homes and buildings, several excellent antique galleries and enough art galleries and bric-a-brac shops to absorb the most discerning collector. The Courthouse and Old Gaol Museum collections at Guildford focus on colonial settlement of the historic town and its agricultural hinterland, the Swan Valley. But it's only open from 2pm until 5pm on Sunday.
The original church where St Matthew's Church now stands was built in 1860 and destroyed by storm in 1872 during a christening. Fortunately no one was injured. The church standing today was built in 1873 with a moat surrounding it, which is still there, on three sides, at least. It’s a short trip from Guildford into the delightful Swan Valley, which produces some of Australia’s finest wines, to the Darling Ranges, or into the John Forrest National Park - a rugged expanse of natural bush containing some delightful streams ...
